Internet use can lead to abuse

Let's be as clear as possible. Be very careful what you write/communicate or download in e-mails, on your website, your blog, your personal page, etc. Those words and downloads could follow you for the rest of your life. Not only can people print out copies of what you have written, the information, even if deleted, can become a permanent record on your hard drive. People may lose jobs and relationships, and can be sued, arrested, or jailed for information they have written on e-mails or websites

Internet Awareness Parent Evening

Had a very interesting and informative evening with parents and some staff from my school exploring some of the issues and aspects of the internet from their kids’ point of view. It’s Safe Schools Week here in Australia and so it was good timing to do this event as part of the school’s series of Parent Information Sessions. I tried to cover the area of what kids are going online to do these days and not to play up the “internet danger” angle..........

Internet Privacy Concerns and Social Awareness as Determinants of Intention to Transact

http://portal.acm.org/guide.cfm?coll=GUIDE&dl=GUIDE&CFID=47147956&CFTOKEN=28975793

This study focuses on antecedents to Internet privacy concerns and the behavioral intention to conduct on-line transactions. Perceptions of privacy are socially constructed through communication and transactions with social entities over a networked environment, a process that involves a certain level of technical skill and literacy. The research model specifies that social awareness and Internet literacy are related to both Internet privacy and intention to transact. Survey data collected from 422 respondents were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) with LISREL and provided support for the hypothesized relationships.

Internet Situation Awareness

This paper appears in: eCrime Researchers Summit, 2008

Abstract
The Internet is consisting of autonomous systems each managed by individual and rival organizations, which makes it very difficult to capture as a whole. Internet situation awareness can be accomplished by creating a common basis for private and public operators to monitor their networks. Thus, an overlay monitoring layer is needed, which can be utilized to address a very important aspect for a more secure and trustworthy Internet. This is the need of various stakeholders to have the information they need to perform their decision tasks in a reliable fashion.

Stranger Awareness and Internet Safety for School-Age Children

Many experts now agree that rather than telling children not to talk to strangers, it is important to teach them to develop good judgment about strangers. If your school-age child becomes separated from you, he or she may need to seek the help of a stranger.

Parents and caregivers should point out people who a child could go to for help in a store or other public place (e.g., uniformed employee, security personnel, police officer, or mom with children). The important part of dealing with strangers is that children should understand that they should not speak to strangers who approach them.

Internet Awareness and Use in the University of Ghana

Reports on a study to find the extent of awareness and use of the Internet and its resources by academic staff and postgraduate students of the University of Ghana. The purposes for which Internet resources were used and respondents’ perceptions of the usefulness of the Internet were also explored. The main findings indicate that both staff and students are fully aware of the Internet and most of its services. Academic staff in general use the Internet resources more than students. However apart from e-mail, frequencies of use of Internet resources are very low. The study established that e-mail is highly used by both staff and students. Both staff and students found the Internet a very useful resource. The main reason for non-use of the Internet is inadequate training. Both staff and students need appropriate education and training of to ensure effective use of the Internet in all their academic pursuits.

How to protect yourself on the Internet

Please note that if you are using a computer which is also available to persons you wish not to see what you are viewing, there are several security risks you should consider. Often times in abusive relationships, jealousy and paranoia are two of the most common symptoms. This can lead to suspicion which can turn into your worst enemy. In protecting yourself it is best not to view content on the topic of abuse from a mutual location. Instead visit a public library, a friends house, a school computer, or a work computer if available. Never underestimate your abuser. They will search for reasons for their actions....

Insafe meeting brings together internet safety awareness nodes

European Schoolnet, as coordinator of the Insafe network, organised a training meeting for all partners in the project on 23-24 June 2008 in Copenhagen. 25 countries participated in the meeting, and received training on topics including youth panels and gaming. They also exchanged views and experiences, and devised new strategies.

On the first day, online games was the major issue on the agenda. After thematic introductions and breaking-out in groups to discuss report findings, risks, challenges and ways of formulating awareness about online games, the afternoon was dedicated to hands-on experience at the Danish Gaming School, an organisation which advocates quality time with games and offers relevant training, including safer use elements.

Context Awareness:

Context Awareness: Unlocking the Mobile Internet

Session Time: Thursday, September 17, 9:00am, 2009

Zeus Kerravala, SVP, Yankee Group

Over the past few years the Mobile Internet has been positioned as the next great frontier for the growth of the Internet. However, the adoption and usage of the mobile Internet has been modest at best. This begs the question, if the mobile Internet holds so much promise, why is the adoption so low? The answer lies in the fact that the mobile Internet needs to do more than just mobilize the current Internet. The mobile Internet connects all things and all people and creates a personalized, context aware experience. Knowledge of who a who a person is, what they are doing, and location is are the missing ingredients that will jumpstart the mobile Internet. This presentation will provide a vision for what a context aware Internet will look like, highlight the key building blocks and provide recommendations on how companies in the mobile Internet ecosystem can benefit from this upcoming trend

Internet Awareness at Capo USD

After the exciting morning at Salem, I had a bit of time in the afternoon to bone up on my Internet Awareness and Safety presentation before heading out to Capistrano Unified School District to lead a workshop there for the Orange County Department of Education. When we ran these workshops in Laguna Beach, there was generally around 20 to 40 parents participating, allowing for good discussion. Capo had over 120 RSVPs for Wednesday night’s event, but in the end we probably had around 60 people I would guess. It turned out to be a good group with lots of good questions. In answering questions, I was joined by Victor Guthrie, IT director for the LBUSD (who co-developed the workshop with me), Karla Kerr from the Orange County Sheriff’s department, and Robert Craven of the OCDE. Bonnie Cameron and Dr. Susan Holliday hosted the event in the CUSD boardroom.

Internet Safety Awareness

Internet safety awareness is more needed today than ever, and yet receives very little attention. The Internet continues to experience a phenomenal growth rate, and the dangers on the Internet are just as dynamic. This creates an alarmingly proportional growth in victims, yet the awareness of the Internet public at large is dismal.

Test promotes Internet awareness

SHANGHAI: China has amazed the world with its rapid developments in the information technology sector. It has 111 million netizens, making it second only to the United States in terms of the number of users.

But equally shocking and worrying to many parents, teachers and lawmakers is the alarming number of children now addicted to the Internet.

A week-long experiment, which started this weekend in Shanghai, aims to persuade the public, especially teenagers, not to over-use various forms of media, particularly the Internet.

The study splits 24 students into three groups: one group is not allowed to watch TV; another cannot log onto the Internet; the third cannot do either...

Broadband Internet access, awareness, and use: Analysis of United States household data

Data obtained from a nationwide survey of US residences during September and October 2002 are used to investigate household awareness of high-speed Internet access, profile Internet access and use, and gain insight into how important always-on, price, speed, installation, and reliability attributes are in their choice of service. Preliminary analysis suggests relatively high awareness of cable modem and DSL availability. Almost 19 percent of the sample have high-speed connectivity, and the mean price paid per month for dial-up and high-speed access is $19.76 and $42.36, respectively. Preference for high-speed access is apparent among households with higher income and college education. About 63 percent of high-speed users have more than five years of online experience, compared to 48 percent of dial-up users, and high-speed users are twice as likely to share music files and photos, bank, trade stocks, and pay bills “many times a week” than dial-up users. Willingness-to-pay estimates indicate reliability of service, speed, and always-on connectivity are important Internet access attributes

8.6 Net Awareness

interbiznet.com
Characteristics of A Great Website

8.6 Net Awareness

Net awareness is a major component of good Website design. Websites are generally not isolated representations for small companies standing alone in a marketplace. They are more like nodes in a network of Websites with similar or related content. One way to think of such a network is to consider the advent of the component stereo sound system.

In the 1960s, following the development of stereophonic record albums, the consumer electronics industry experienced a major Renaissance. Until that point, high-fidelity sound systems were all integrated into a single unit that generally included a record changer, speakers, an amplifier, a radio receiver and perhaps even a reel-to-reel tape player.

Initially, there was market resistance to the idea of mix-and-match components for stereo systems. Although the consumer could, with the assistance of the salesperson, design an optimal sound system, the additional technical knowledge that this was perceived as requiring was seen as a market barrier. Ultimately, the decentralization of stereo-equipment development created a massive surge in the global consumer electronics industry.

The Web has similarities to a component sound system. To create an effective Website, its designer selects a combination of the desired components, directly mixing elements of the Website with links and pointers to portions of other Websites.

While this idea goes against the grain of traditional corporate strategy, the mix of components indicates that the Website is part of a larger picture and that its designer (or the firm providing the Website) has a sense of how the Net is structured. or Net awareness. Good Net awareness shows, and it lends a special cachet to a Website.

In the end, whether for a user of a Website or a stereo system, it's all in the mix.

The survey found that 8 per cent of British computer users, about 1.5 million people, use the Net, and that two-thirds of all adults (65 per cent) have heard of it. Only 17 per cent of those who had heard of it were unable to describe it.

The survey revealed that 41 per cent of British adults have use of a computer, more of them at home (28 per cent) than at work (25 per cent). Southerners are more computer literate than those in the North, accounting for the highest proportion of IT users (46 per cent - compared with 38 per cent in the Midlands and the West and 37 per cent in the North).

A survey for Compaq found 51 per cent of parents would like their child to have access to the Net: "More than two-thirds believe a home computer would improve their children's education and 30 per cent believe this is a key benefit of the Net. But 30 per cent did not know of any benefits from the Net: availability of pornography was the chief fear, while 14 per cent were worried about who their children would communicate with." RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: It is generally acknowledged that health care providers who offer services for free or at reduced cost play an important role in providing at least a minimum level of access to care to uninsured persons. However, the effectiveness of these safety net providers may be limited to the extent that many uninsured parent aware of these providers. This research examines the extent to which uninsured persons are or are not aware of safety net providers in their communities; examines a variety of health system, policy, and sociodemographic characteristics associated with safety net awareness; and explores the implications of awareness or lack of awareness for access to care. STUDY DESIGN: Data are based on the 2003 Community Tracking Study household survey. The survey included questions asked of uninsured persons and their family members as to whether or not they paid full or reduced cost at their usual source of medical care, or if they were aware of providers in their community who offered affordable care to uninsured persons. Uninsured respondents who were aware of safety net providers were also asked the type of place (e.g. physicians office, hospital-based facility, clinic). A multinomial logistic regression analysis is conducted to examine the effects of various health system, policy, and sociodemographic characteristics on awareness of the different types of safety net providers. We focus especially on the effects of local safety net capacity on awareness, such as safety net hospitals, community health centers, and physician charity care, as well as the impact of Community Access Program (CAP) grants, all obtained through secondary data and linked to the CTS household survey. We also examine whether awareness of safety net providers is associated with fewer unmet medical needs. POPULATION STUDIED: Nonelderly uninsured persons PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Less than half of the uninsured (47.5 percent) reported that they used or were aware of a safety net provider in their community that offered subsidized services to the uninsured. Among those uninsured who were aware of a safety net provider, most identified clinics and health centers (44.6 percent) and physicians offices (26.1 percent) as the safety net provider they were aware of. Fewer uninsured identified hospital outpatient clinics (12.9 percent) and emergency departments (8.3 percent) as safety net providers. The results of the regression analysis show that higher capacity of safety net hospitals, CHCs, and physician charity care increases awareness of safety net providers. The presence of CAP grants in the community also increases safety net awareness. Nevertheless, many uninsured remain unaware of safety net providers despite living in close proximity to a safety net provider. Awareness of safety net providers was also associated with fewer unmet medical needs. CONCLUSIONS: Many uninsured are not aware of safety net providers, including many who live near a major safety net provider such as a public hospital or community health center. Greater awareness of safety net providers is associated with improved access, although further research is needed to more firmly establish the causal link between safety net awareness and access. IMPLICATIONS FOR POLICY, DELIVERY OR PRACTICE: Increasing awareness of safety net providers may be as important in improving access as increasing capacity in the system. Just as outreach efforts have been critical for enrolling eligible children in public insurance programs, outreach activities may be important in increasing awareness of safety net providers by uninsured persons.

"Dot-Net Awareness" Day

"Dot-Net Awareness" Day!
Every second rate charity seems to have its own special day, when poor office Jills and Johnnies are forced to Dress Like Idiots for an Inconsequential Reason.

In an effort not to be left behind in this world of Idea Viruses, I'd like to propose that Microsoft DotNet should have its very own day, with stupid costumes to boot.

Dress as your favourite namespace for 'Dot Net' Awareness Day!
To try and shock those managerial executives who continually resist upgrading from legacy applications into dotNet, why not dress as a Demon from the DLL Hell!?

Or to show the light, why not attach some angelic wings and dress as a heavenly Assembly with click-once deployment?

Can't afford an expensive costume? Why not dress as the Garbage Collector? Sure to be a hit with the ladies! Or you could dress as the Global Assembly Cache and eat all the doughnuts. Why limit yourself to just one doughnut? Thanks to side-by-side versioning, you can eat all the Doughnuts you want!

I already have my costume designed. Mentally at least. While everyone else will be dressing as the predictable System.Data.SqlClient, or the angular System.Xml, I will be wowing my colleagues in a stunning garment fashioned to represent the dazzling System.ComponentModel.Design.Serialization namespace, with a very natty little IDesignerSerializationProvider hat.

And you can be sure there will be no Java drank on "Dot-Net Awareness" Day!

Even the little kids can join in. Imagine how unique your children will look, dressed in their little GUID costumes.

Hang on... the caffeine high is fading away now... hallucinations subsiding... no longer envisioning dot net as a bizarre series of monsters... must get on with work...

By now, most of us are aware of the potential privacy risks posed by Web cookies. But according to a new paper published by security consultancy iSec Partners, traditional browser-based cookies aren't the only technology used to store user data anymore. A number of browser plug-ins offer similar capabilities and because plug-ins are nonstandard browser components, users are often unaware that these silent conversations are even taking place.
